Kalamazoo Functional Rehab Team's mission is to provide high-quality rehabilitation services to clients by providing a multi-disciplinary approach in a community based setting. We strive to work beyond the barriers of clinic walls and address deficits where they affect clients the most - at home or in the community. Our goal is to maximize each client's potential to reintegrate into life using their prior level and helping them rehabilitate and grow beyond their deficits.

Kalamazoo Functional Rehab Team is committed to providing inclusive, respectful care for people of all backgrounds, identities, and abilities. We value the unique experiences each person brings and work to accommodate cultural scheduling needs, language barriers, communication preferences, and individual support needs. Our goal is to create a welcoming, equitable environment where every client feels seen, heard, and supported throughout their rehabilitation journey.
Kalamazoo Functional Rehab Team supports patients of all ages through every stage of their rehabilitation journey. For children, we emphasize a play-based approach and encourage active family involvement in goal setting and treatment. Our pediatric services also address educational transitions and social integration, helping each child build confidence and independence in home, school, and community environments.
We also recognize that rehabilitation is not a one-time event—it's an evolving process. “Graduating” from therapy does not mean new challenges won’t emerge over time. Many individuals adapt well to their chronic, life-changing injuries, but age-related changes can create new functional needs. KFR Team provides ongoing support for clients experiencing new injuries or adjusting to changes in their longstanding deficits as they age.
To further support independence, our team includes certified Aging-in-Place (CAPS) specialists who help clients plan to remain safely and comfortably in their homes throughout the aging process.
Kalamazoo Functional Rehab Team provides individualized rehabilitation services tailored to each person’s strengths, needs, and goals. To ensure safe, effective, and appropriate care, we consider the following factors during screening and service planning:
We assess each person’s mobility, daily living skills, endurance, and functional abilities to design treatment plans that match their current level of performance and support meaningful progress.
We evaluate behavioral needs, communication challenges, and the level of structure or support required to maintain a safe and productive treatment environment. When needed, we collaborate with family, caregivers, and behavioral professionals.
KFR Team provides services to individuals who are medically stable enough to participate safely in home-to-community-based therapy. We review medical conditions, recent hospitalizations, and ongoing treatments to ensure services are offered at the right time and in the right setting.
Some individuals may require specific supervision levels, equipment, or environmental modifications. We identify these needs during the intake process to ensure appropriate support and safe service delivery.
We recognize that emotional well-being, trauma history, motivation, and mental health needs impact rehabilitation. Our approach includes trauma-informed care, coordination with mental health providers when appropriate, and sensitivity to each client’s psychological readiness for therapy.
We specialize in working with clients who have orthopedic and neurological injuries—often both—along with emotional and psychological challenges related to trauma.
Our approach brings therapy into real-life environments where it holds the most meaning and presents the most opportunity for growth. While therapy may begin in the home, our goal is to support clients as they transition into the community, where they can apply their skills in more dynamic, less controlled settings. This is especially critical for individuals recovering from brain injuries, as it helps build confidence, adaptability, and true functional independence.
Too often, individuals recovering from traumatic injuries find themselves defined by the role of “patient.” At Kalamazoo Functional Rehab Team, we focus on helping clients reconnect with meaningful activities—whether returning to those they enjoyed before their injury or discovering new ways to engage with their community.
This may include activities such as shopping, attending school or work, exercising outdoors or at a community gym, and other personalized goals that support independence, identity, and quality of life.
Our therapists are a small, dedicated team of contracted professionals, carefully selected based on the specific needs of each client. We tailor our communication approach to suit the unique circumstances of each case and the preferences of the referring provider or case manager.
When appropriate, services are streamlined—for example, if a client only requires speech therapy, that will be the sole focus of care. This flexible, needs-based model ensures efficient, personalized treatment without unnecessary overlap.
Our therapists take a whole-person approach, working closely with clients, their families, and members of their interdisciplinary team. While each therapist practices within their professional scope, we prioritize open communication—with one another, physicians, and case managers—to help bridge the gaps that often exist in specialized healthcare.
This collaborative model ensures continuity of care and supports better outcomes for our clients.
We are based in Southwest Michigan, near the Kalamazoo area. Our goal is to provide the highest quality care while meeting each client’s individual needs.
Because travel availability depends on current caseloads and the complexity of client needs, our service area may vary. Please contact us directly to discuss your location and determine whether we can accommodate your care.
We understand that every client’s scheduling needs are unique. Some are navigating the early stages of recovery with multiple follow-up appointments, while others are managing long-standing conditions with established routines. Our team is committed to being as flexible as possible to accommodate your needs.
Each therapist schedules directly with their clients, typically one week at a time, based on client availability and therapist openings. During the initial phase of care, scheduling may vary as we work together to find the best fit. As your treatment plan progresses, appointments often settle into a more consistent routine.
