Kalamazoo Functional Rehab Team is fortunate to have the opportunity to provide a unique service to our clients we call "Adaptive Fitness Training."
Service involves working with a 1:1 professional trained in Exercise Science and advanced training for working with patients who have had traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and/or multi-trauma injuries.
Often these patients are unable to pursue healthy fitness goals without trained expertise and assistance.
This exercise is provided separate from skilled therapy intervention and is meant to allow our clients the opportunity to pursue healthy goals for general exercises and fitness as recommended by the American Heart Association within the realm of their injuries/deficits.
Once a referral is made, the trainer is contacted to ensure availability for scheduling. If the trainer has availability in his/her schedule, they will contact the client to set up an initial fitness assessment to determine fitness goals and develop a fitness plan.
Quarterly fitness assessments are completed to determine progress or status.
At times, the goals for fitness training may not be ADVANCING fitness but rather maintaining fitness or using fitness as an means for mental health/behavioral maintenance. This is often the case for patient's with Traumatic Brain Injury.
Below you will find several links to research articles demonstrating the benefits for exercise for patients in these various populations.
